It all started with John O’Connor Jr. who always said, “National chain fertilizers are like bread, you’ll get by, but you need to add the meat and potatoes.”

As Oklahoman’s know, the clay soil in our state makes maintaining a beautiful lawn quite a challenge. Homeowners need something a little extra to create the perfect deep green lawn. In the early 1990s, O’Connor’s took on the challenge and made a fertilizer specific to Oklahoma soil.

It all started with John O’Connor Jr. and his wife Pat. John had previously carried bigger fertilizer brands in the O’Connor’s store but always said, “National chain fertilizers are like bread, you’ll get by, but you need to add the meat and potatoes.”

The problem is in the clay

After realizing the limitations of the more generic products, John and Pat set out to create something to work for Oklahomans even better. They knew Oklahoma’s soil was vastly different than soil in other states. Oklahoma’s clay “locks up” Iron, Sulphur, and several other key nutrients needed to achieve the perfect lawn.

Expertise to perfect the recipe

To create this new product, John worked to find a company to manufacture their special creation. Meanwhile, Pat perfected the recipe. She took classes at Oklahoma State University to learn more and more about horticulture and gardening. She was also part of the Oklahoma State Extension Committee who was conducting soil tests as part of their volunteer efforts for farmers. John and Pat were perfectly poised to create the unique blend still sold today.

John and Pat researched everything from pH to micro and macronutrients and finally completed it in 1995. When it was all said and done, they branded the product with their name as a stamp of approval and exclusively sold it at the O’Connor’s store.

TODAY O’CONNOR’S SELLS TONS OF FERTILIZER THAT IS BELOVED BY OUR OKLAHOMA CUSTOMERS.
